Changing wheel size or style: build a shortlist before buying
A different spoke design may be enough to change the look you want. A larger wheel diameter is a separate decision involving the tyre and the vehicle. Use this checklist to compare candidates before requesting a quotation.
Start with the change you actually want
- A different design: browse the catalogue images, save two or three model codes, and request photos and confirmation of the actual finish. The catalogue images are visualisations.
- A different diameter: check which complete tyre and wheel combinations the vehicle manufacturer permits. A listing for an 18, 19 or 20-inch wheel is a search result, not a recommendation for your vehicle.
- A different position in the arch: compare width, offset and the tyre together. Do not choose ET from a photograph of another car.
18, 19 or 20 inches: compare the complete combination
In a conventional plus-size change, a larger wheel is paired with a tyre of lower aspect ratio to retain the overall tyre diameter. Michelin advises checking vehicle-manufacturer restrictions because tyre/wheel diameter changes can affect vehicle systems. There is no universal best diameter for every vehicle or road.
Keeping the overall tyre diameter similar means a larger rim alone does not automatically fill the gap above the tyre. If your aim is a particular appearance in the wheel arch, record that aim separately from the wheel diameter.

Put these details beside each candidate
- Vehicle: year, model, trim, engine and brake package; identify any suspension or brake changes.
- Current combination: tyre size on each axle and current wheel diameter, width, PCD, ET and centre bore, where known. If a value is unknown, say so rather than estimating.
- Candidate: RIMVANTA model code and one complete specification row. Keep front and rear specifications separate if they differ.
- Checks still needed: tyre compatibility, fasteners, required load capability and evidence for brake, suspension and body clearances for this configuration.
- Appearance: preferred spoke design and finish, with a request for actual product photos. An image cannot confirm dimensions, finish availability or fitment.
Our parameter and inquiry guide explains the catalogue fields. Use it when comparing rows rather than mixing values from different rows.
Two checks a diameter search cannot answer
Will the wheel clear my brake calipers?
Nominal diameter does not establish brake clearance. Spoke shape and the inner barrel also matter, as illustrated by Apex’s brake-clearance work. If brakes have changed, include the brake kit details and ask for configuration-specific clearance evidence before purchase.
Can the same ET be used with a wider wheel?
Do not assume so. Tire Rack explains that increasing width with unchanged offset adds width on both sides. Compare the full wheel/tyre combination and the available clearances. This guide does not recommend an offset, spacer or suspension change.
A message you can adapt for your shortlist
“I want a different wheel look / to compare permitted wheel sizes. Vehicle: [year, model, trim, brakes]. Suspension or brake changes: [details / none / unknown]. Current wheels and tyres: [front and rear]. Candidates: [model codes and complete specification rows]. Preferred finish: [description]. Please confirm the actual product photos, specifications and what fitment evidence is available.”
